Choosing the right DJ for your Vancouver event can be a bit of a process. It’s always nice to get a referral from someone who can attest to their ability, and in fact, this is how most experienced DJs get booked. However, sometimes you just don’t have that luxury, and trusting your co-workers’ cousin to get the vibe right might not always be the best way to go. If that person doesn’t have a lot of experience, a DJ residency or a reputable company brand (or at least a website) you are rolling the dice.
Through our two decades of entertaining crowds around Vancouver and across Canada, we’ve learned a few things. Personally, I’ve seen DJs and DJ companies come and go through the years. I’ve also seen some last the test of time. I can tell you with absolute certainty that the first few results on a Google search doesn’t always align yourself with the best fit for your event. What it does align you is with a company that has managed to figure out how to optimize their website to land on the first page.
This can be misleading.
I know some of the most talented DJs in the city and most of them don’t appear on the fist page very often. Why? Usually, it’s because they are busy enough through their skills and reputation being at the top of their game that they don’t have to be. They get most of their gigs through word-of-mouth. As a result, they don’t put in the effort to learn and master the fundamentals of marketing and SEO (search engine optimization).
Whether you are hiring for a wedding, corporate event, or other celebration it’s important to realize that some DJ companies have effective marketing, but their product doesn’t match. And some have learned to game the system with fake reviews and other unsavoury online tactics.
I hope to change that. Through educating myself on how to effectively communicate our great DJs to the world while also empowering them to take their brands and businesses to the next level.

- Check their Socials – There should be a sense there of how often they perform and the type of events they do.
- Examine the quality of their website – Has it been updated lately? Does it look modern? Is there a video or image gallery of past events?
- Clear contracts and insurance – Reputable companies should be insured and be willing to forward you a contract right away to get an idea of how they operate.
- Look for reviews that tell a story – As mentioned earlier, some companies can leverage fake reviews. Reading over some you can usually sniff out the ones that look a little sus.
