Every couple that ties the knot and begins planning their big day will decide their wedding’s entertainment. Music and entertainment are a vital aspect of any wedding, so the right entertainment is extremely important. When couples start planning their wedding entertainment, the first decision is often whether to hire a DJ or live band. If you’re still researching DJs, check out our guide on choosing the right DJ for your event.
This is an extremely important decision. Music is the heartbeat of your wedding day, the pulse that keeps the energy and the day’s events unfolding as desired. Depending on your background and budget, it is often times some sort of combination of live music and DJ or just a DJ.
The most common factor when considering a Vancouver band vs. DJ is what budget you are working with. Let’s be real, most couples choose DJs because it is the most affordable and safest way to address music for the day. If you need music for your ceremony and reception, hiring a Vancouver wedding DJ is the most affordable and simple way to cover all your bases. A live band is always going to cost significantly more than a DJ. If you’re curious about what goes into DJ pricing, we break it down in our guide to Vancouver wedding DJ prices.
Wedding Music Options in Vancouver
If you’re lucky enough to be able to afford a band, you should start with a DJ as your foundation, as they can act like stage managers and keep things flowing when the band isn’t playing. Just putting on a playlist between band sets isn’t the best move. There will be issues with volume and song selection, and the vibe will wilt when the band isn’t on.
Ceremonies often have instrumentalists such as violinists, harpists, and guitarists. These can add a real magical element to your ceremony, and I highly recommend if you have the budget, but consider this something on top of a DJ for your ceremony as someone may need to plug into a speaker system or need a microphone, and that is easily done by any DJ company.
Run time on the average wedding is 8 hours from the start of the ceremony to last dance, you can’t have a band playing the whole time, but for arguments sake, let’s run the numbers on a few packages. We have three options to consider:
- Ceremony and reception DJ package
- Instrumentalist with ceremony and reception DJ package
- 5-piece band with ceremony and reception DJ package
1) Ceremony and Reception DJ Package
Through the years we have found that this is the most popular configuration for most weddings. This is the most cost effective and checks all the boxes for everything you need regarding sound, lighting, and music for the entire day. This year, in speaking with fellow DJs and clients in the Vancouver area, we have found the average price to be around$1700 for a full day ceremony and reception DJ package.
Average Price: $1700
2) Instrumentalist with Ceremony and Reception DJ Package
As previously mentioned, instrumentalists add a nice and dreamy touch to a ceremony. Using them in conjunction with your DJ company to ensure proper sound considerations, is a great move. Generally, the musician will provide a vibe for the pre-ceremony music (about 30 minutes before the start of the ceremony as guests are arriving and getting seated) and sometimes during the ceremony. Often, it’s just the pre-ceremony music with the DJ taking over to play the desired recordings for the ceremony, with signing and recessional songs for after. Then your DJ will take over all the music duties for the rest of the day.
Average Price: $2500
Band with Ceremony and Reception DJ Package
Coming from a family of musicians, and working with bands every week, I have a great respect for talented musicians. The time and dedication to perfecting your technique and performance is something to be admired and respected. When you hire these professionals, you are not just hiring them for the time they are at your event. You are hiring them for the years of work they put into mastering their craft, in addition to the time preparing specifically for your event. This comes at a cost that can easily command $1000 per player per night. On average, in the Vancouver area in 2026, musicians are charging somewhere between $500-$1000 per event, depending on their skill level and availability during high demand periods. Assuming a band consists of five members, and averaging musician rates at $750 per night, a band performing two or three hours (split into two or three sets), with an audio engineer, will likely cost somewhere around $4250. It can be lower and it can be higher—you get what you pay for. There is also additional production equipment to be considered as well, such as a proper multitrack mixing console, and additional monitor speakers or in-ear systems for band members.
Average Price: $6000
Pros and Cons of a Wedding DJ
A professional wedding DJ is the most common entertainment choice for weddings in Vancouver, and for good reason. DJs provide a flexible and efficient way to cover the entire day from ceremony to last dance.
Pros
Variety of music
A DJ has access to virtually every genre and song imaginable. This means you can hear everything from classic Motown to modern hip hop and EDM, from 90s throwbacks to today’s chart hits. A good DJ can read the room and quickly pivot the music to keep the dance floor full. This virtually unlimited access is a distinct advantage. From ceremony music to late-night dance floor bangers, it allows couples to truly customize the soundtrack of their day.
Continuous music
Unlike bands that perform in sets, DJs can keep the music going all night. There are no long breaks where the energy drops or guests wander away from the dance floor.
Lower cost
A DJ package is significantly more affordable than hiring a full band. With average pricing around $1700 for ceremony and reception coverage, it is usually the most budget friendly option.
Built in event flow management
Experienced wedding DJs often act as informal stage managers. They coordinate timing for entrances, speeches, dinner transitions, and the dance portion of the night. This keeps the evening moving smoothly. Working with
Compact setup
DJ equipment requires less space than a full band setup. This makes DJs easier to accommodate in smaller venues or venues with tighter production limitations.
Cons
Less visual performance
While great DJs can create amazing energy, they do not provide the same visual spectacle as a group of live musicians performing on stage.
Perception of simplicity
Some couples feel that pressing play on recorded music lacks the artistic element of live performance, even though skilled DJs do far more than simply play songs.

Pros and Cons of a Wedding Band
Live bands bring a completely different kind of energy to a wedding. When done well, a band can create a memorable and emotional atmosphere that feels unique to the moment.
Pros
Live performance energy
There is something powerful about live musicians performing together. The presence of singers, guitarists, drummers, and other players adds a visual and emotional element that recorded music cannot fully replicate.
Unique interpretations of songs
Bands can bring their own style to familiar songs. A well-arranged cover can make a song feel fresh and personal.
Stage presence and entertainment value
A strong band front person can engage the crowd and turn the dance floor into a real show. For couples who want their wedding to feel like a concert experience, this can be a major draw.
Memorable atmosphere
Many couples choose a band because the experience feels elevated and special. Guests often remember a great live performance long after the wedding.
Cons
Higher cost
Bands are significantly more expensive. With multiple musicians, rehearsal time, transportation, and sound production requirements, the total cost can easily reach $5000 to $8000 or more.
Limited song list
Even excellent bands typically perform a fixed set list of songs they have rehearsed. Requests are more limited compared to a DJ with access to a massive music library.
Breaks between sets
Bands usually perform in two or three sets. During breaks, the energy of the room can drop unless a DJ is handling music between sets.
Production requirements
Bands often require larger staging areas, additional sound equipment, and sometimes a sound engineer. This can complicate logistics depending on the venue.
Why Couples Choose Either One
In the end, most couples make this decision based on three main factors: budget, atmosphere, and flexibility.
Couples who prioritize affordability and music variety almost always choose a DJ. A DJ can cover the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner music, and the full dance portion of the night without interruption. It is the simplest and most reliable solution.
Couples who want a dramatic live performance experience sometimes leans toward a band. If the budget allows for it, the combination of a band for the dance sets and a DJ for the rest of the evening can create a great balance.
Another factor is the style of wedding. Formal ballroom weddings sometimes favor live bands, while modern or high energy receptions often favor DJs who can quickly move between genres and eras of music.
The reality is that both options can create incredible wedding celebrations when executed well. The key is hiring experienced professionals who understand how weddings flow and how to keep guests engaged throughout the night.

Final Thoughts
Music sets the emotional tone for your entire wedding day. From the moment guests arrive at the ceremony to the final song of the night, the right entertainment helps create the memories that everyone will talk about long after the celebration ends.
